How to Recharge and Revitalize Your Weight Loss Practice for Growth

— By Karol Clark, MSN, RN

Sometimes it just takes a fresh perspective, openness to new strategies and expert tips to reinvigorate the growth of your weight loss practice.

Have you ever felt as if you are too busy or too close to a situation to creatively problem solve? This can hamper your judgement and your ability to see the bigger picture. It can also create an invisible barrier to positive progress.

Without taking the time to step back and gain a fresh perspective, you risk remaining in a cycle of unproductive actions. Yet, if you take the time to step back, you are more likely to be able to reassess, reframe, and approach any situation with renewed clarity and purpose. This can ultimately facilitate growth and forward momentum for you, your team and your weight loss practice.

It helps to do this personally; however, if you include your team leaders, and perhaps an outside and experienced fresh viewpoint from someone you trust, you can hasten your understanding of exactly what actions will bring the best results for faster goal attainment. Whether your goal is adding more patients, increasing your profitability, improving patient outcomes, adding a new revenue stream, building a loyal team, increasing productivity — or any combination of these goals — use this information to help clarify your next steps so you can get where you want to go faster and with more confidence.

A Great Place to Start: Prioritize and Focus your Efforts

There are two great ways to prioritize and focus your efforts. The first way is to take a moment to identify what is frustrating you the most. What aspect of your practice is keeping you up at night, taking up too much of your time, or driving you crazy? Once you pinpoint what that is, evaluate the root cause and put a plan (or new/revised system) into motion to correct the issue. This could relate to team efficiency, technology, administrative requirements, marketing, sales, patient experience, or something else.

The second (often overlooked) way to focus your efforts is to take a close look at your entire patient pathway from initial inquiry (including how they found you), to becoming an established patient, and their entire weight loss and maintenance journey. When you map this out and evaluate every single step, you can pinpoint areas that are contributing to your frustrations and likely the overall satisfaction of your team and patients. Then you can get to work making improvements which leads progress, positive energy and ultimately goal attainment.

Ways to Recharge Your Weight Loss Practice for Growth

Once you know what primary action(s) may need to be deleted, modified, or added, it is time to pick one area of concern to avoid being overwhelmed and dive in. Below are five of the most effective ways weight loss practitioners and their teams revitalize their practice for added growth while decreasing their frustration:

  1. Attract New Patients: As you already know, the continuous addition of new patients fuels your financial stability and drives sustainable growth for your practice. There is nothing like seeing your schedule consistently filled with new patients. However, with the high degree of competition in the field, this can be easier said than done. Currently, some of the best, most cost-effective ways to attract new patients include a digital marketing strategy that includes search engine optimization, social media marketing and targeted online and pay-per-click advertising. Great ways to accomplish this includes posting engaging content on your social media channels, informative blog posts and videos, and patient success stories. For organic and paid advertising efforts, always have a clear call to action and next step for interested patients to take. In addition, patient referral programs, reviews, and testimonials builds trust and helps attract new patients who are inspired by real-life results of your patients and their personal experiences. Some practices are also having success by establishing patient ambassador programs.
  1. Create a Better Patient Experience and Outcome: When your patients have a great patient experience and weight loss outcome, it fosters added patient satisfaction and loyalty. This is important for sustainable practice growth and one of the best, most inexpensive ways to foster such growth. This is accomplished by ensuring that your patients feel supported, respected, and understood throughout their weight loss journey. Every patient interaction with every team member is a touch point opportunity to either encourage such positive relationships or erode them. High patient satisfaction leads to higher retention rates and encourages word-of-mouth referrals.
  2. Improve Operational Efficiency: When you take the time to streamline workflow processes in your weight loss practice (i.e. scheduling, staff training, patient education, billing and collections, patient communication), you can recharge growth in your practice. When you improve operational efficiency, it frees you and your team up from putting out fires all day long. It allows you to be more creative and proactive. This also takes place when you leverage technology to better serve your team and your patients. Enhanced efficiency also allows you to handle a higher patient volume without compromising quality. And, it sets you apart from your competitors while building your reputation as the reliable, high-quality, high-touch provider in and around your community.
  3. Optimize Service Offerings (Less or More): When it comes to the programs, products and services you offer, sometimes less is more. Meaning, if you have too many options, your patients may become confused as to which option is best for them. This results in indecision and shopping for a more straightforward or better marketed option to accomplish their weight loss goals. Always know what your main offering is and fine tune every aspect of your offer, your actual services, and what the next step is after your patients attain their goal(s). Once this is humming along, then consider adding complimentary services or revenue streams. The same can be true if you are not keeping up with the latest advancements when it comes to weight loss and simply “doing what we have always done” in such a dynamic industry. Bottom line, know your main service and product offerings and then add on as science and/or your patient needs dictate. By remaining ahead of industry trends and refining your service and product offerings, you can be the innovative leader in your field which drives success and growth.
  1. Increase Profitability: It is not enough to look at gross revenues alone. It is your bottom line and cash flow that allows you to invest in advanced technology, expand your service offerings, attract and retain a talented team, and enhance your patient care processes. Profitability also allows you to explore various organic and paid marketing campaigns for added visibility and engagement. Depending upon your ultimate goal(s), you can also expand your current location or add other locations. Profitability is also essential for any viable exit strategy down the road when you may be ready to retire.

Feeling recharged and revitalized is exhilarating. It clears your mind for added creativity and puts you into more of a growth mindset. Follow these guidelines for sustained practice growth, increased team and patient satisfaction, and greater peace of mind.
