5 Ways to Leverage Instagram for Your Weight Loss Practice
— By Karol Clark, MSN, RN
Instagram is a dynamic tool that allows your weight loss practice to attract new patients, retain existing ones, and build an engaged community interested in what you have to offer.
With over a billion active users each month, Instagram has become a prime space for reaching potential patients, especially in the weight loss and wellness arena. In fact, 90 percent of Instagram users follow at least one business, and 72 percent of consumers turn to social media for health-related information — making Instagram a trusted source for those seeking guidance, inspiration and support on their weight loss journey.1,2
As a visual platform, Instagram is ideal for weight loss practices. It offers unique opportunities to inspire, educate and connect with potential patients in meaningful ways. While it can be overwhelming and something you choose to outsource — or ignore completely — it is a tool that can differentiate you and your practice from your competitors without having to be on camera or drain your time and resources. And for many, it is a way to showcase your personality, share your message, have some fun, and grow your practice.
Before we discuss strategies for effectively using Instagram, it is important for you to build a strong Instagram business profile.
How to Build a Strong Business Profile on Instagram
A well-crafted Instagram profile creates a strong first impression and helps potential patients quickly understand your values and what you offer. This is crucial for turning profile visitors into followers and ultimately into patients.
- Optimize Your Bio: Use concise language to clearly state who you are, what you offer, and how you can help. Include relevant keywords like “Weight Loss Surgery,” “Medical Weight Loss Program,” and/or “Weight Loss Medications,” so your profile is easily searchable.
- Add a Call to Action (CTA): Include a link in your bio directing visitors to schedule a consultation, visit your website, or download a lead magnet (i.e. a resource they would be interested in). Use tools like Linktree or Instagram’s own multi-link feature if you want to direct people to multiple resources. However, be wary of offering too many choices which can be perceived as confusing.
- Use a Branded Profile Picture: Your profile picture should be easily recognizable and professional — typically your logo or a clean headshot. Consistency across platforms helps build your brand recognition.
- Highlight Key Stories: Make good use of “Story Highlights” for frequently requested information, like “Patient Success,” “FAQ,” “Tips” and “Procedures.” This allows new visitors to get a snapshot of your services without scrolling through your entire feed.
- Craft a Cohesive Look: Choose a consistent style for your posts. This could include a specific color palette, filter, or layout style that aligns with your brand’s image. Cohesive visuals make your profile look polished and professional.
- Pin Important Posts: Instagram allows you to pin up to three posts at the top of your profile. Pin posts that introduce your team, explain your main services, or showcase powerful patient testimonials. This keeps crucial information front and center.
- Showcase Credentials and Awards: Add any professional credentials, certifications, or awards in your bio or in a pinned post. This adds credibility and reassures visitors of your expertise.
- Regularly Update Your Profile: To keep your profile relevant, update it with information such as special services, new procedures, or team changes. Such updates should be reflected in your bio, Highlights and pinned posts.
How to Leverage Instagram for your Weight Loss Practice
Now to the Instagram strategies that help build awareness, trust and business growth for your weight loss practice. These tips cover the latest trends and offer actionable advice to set your practice apart from your competitors.
- Connect with Your Audience Through Stories
Everyone loves a story. Stories offer an effective way to connect authentically with your audience by sharing behind-the-scenes moments for you and your patients along with your personal insights. This builds trust and humanizes your brand.
- Proudly Show your Day-to-Day Activities: Share snippets of your workday such as setting up for a consultation, scrubbing for surgery, meal prepping, pictures with your patients in pre-op holding, or a patient celebrating a milestone during an office visit. This invites interaction and an opportunity for your patients and others to share your posts.
- Use Q&A Boxes: Post a question box for followers to ask about their weight loss challenges or questions they have. Then answer these questions in a few of your Stories. This offers interaction and offers value through your shared expertise.
- Add Polls and Sliders: Use interactive tools like polls or sliders to engage your followers with questions like “Do you meal prep?” or “Looking for weight loss tips?”
- Save Your Stories to Highlights: When you see an interactive response, save these useful stories to your highlights under the appropriate headers you have in place such as “Patient Success,” “FAQ,” “Tips” and “Procedures.”
- Share Patient Journeys with Permission
Patient stories inspire and give prospective patients a relatable perspective on the transformations you and your team offer.
- Use Carousel Posts: Show “before,” “during” and “after” photos in a single post to highlight patient progress and steps of their journey.
- Feature Testimonials in Reels: Create short video testimonials where patients share their experience. This quick, relatable content is ideal for sharing on your other platforms and for patients/team members sharing on their social media.
- Keep it Real: Be sure to show both wins and challenges to make stories authentic and encouraging.
- Obtain Written Consent: Be sure to attain written consent for all patient content and ensure HIPAA compliance.
- Position Yourself as an Expert with Educational Content
Share brief, actionable advice on weight loss, nutrition, fitness and wellness to establish credibility and trust with your current and prospective patients (your audience).
- Start a Weekly Series: Use themes like “Testimonial Tuesday,” or “Weight Loss Wednesday” or “Ask the Weight Loss Doctor.” Then follow through with your weekly posts.
- Go Live for Q&As: Host Q&A sessions or myth-busting discussions. Be sure to announce them in advance for higher engagement. You can also promote and host a discussion on a specific topic, such as “Weight Gain in Menopause — Why It Happens & What To Do About It.” Be sure people are aware of when you will be live and ask them to share it with others.
- Use the “Guides” feature on Instagram to organize related posts by topic, such as “Weight Loss Recipes” or “Weight Loss Myths.”
- Boost Visibility with Influencers and/or Partnerships
While this idea is not innate to health care professionals, it is a very viable option and important trend that is resulting in added outreach and faster growth for many weight loss practices. Partnering with health-oriented influencers or other practitioners who serve the same clientele you do can increase your reach and credibility.
- Find Aligned Influencers: Focus on wellness influencers that serve the same population and don’t forget to utilize local celebrities or patients you have had the pleasure of serving and improving their health through weight loss.
- Create Authentic Content: Jointly produce content that showcases your services. Perhaps jointly produce a segment with physician who has shared in the transformation and improved health of one of your patients. This could be their primary care physician, orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeon or the like.
- Offer a Giveaway: Collaborate on a “Wellness Bundle” giveaway to attract new followers and generate new local leads.
- Ensure the Influencer/Partner Tags Your Profile: Make sure you are tagged in all promotional and educational posts and consider offering their followers a unique discount code for your products or services. At the very least, tag them as well.
- Maximize Your Reach with Reels and Trending Sounds or Songs
Instagram Reels are prioritized by the platform, making them ideal for reaching new followers.
- Leverage Trends: Put your own twist on popular formats, like “What I Eat in a Day after Weight Loss Surgery” or “What I Eat in a Day for Weight Loss,” and share your healthy tips.
- Keep it Short and Informative: Stick to 15-30 seconds if possible. Break down your tips or demonstrations into small and impactful segments.
- Use Captions: Many viewers watch without sound, so include captions to ensure your message gets across.
- Use Relevant Hashtags: Include hashtags that stay on top of trends. Ideas include #yourname, #yourbusinessname, #yourlocation, as well as others such as #weightlosstips or #weightlosssurgerysuccess.
With Instagram continuing to grow and 80 percent of users saying they use Instagram to research products and services, it’s more important than ever for weight loss practices to leverage this platform strategically. Start implementing these tips today, and you’ll not only expand your reach but also become a trusted resource for individuals looking to improve their health. Imagine the impact when just a 10 percent increase in engagement leads to more booked consultations and successful weight loss transformations!
